RPEQ Certification & Engineering Services
What is RPEQ Certification?
The Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ) designation is a registration administered by the Board of Professional Engineers Queensland (BPEQ). It signifies that an engineer has demonstrated the competence and professionalism required to provide professional engineering services in Queensland, backed by comprehensive insurance and adherence to strict professional standards.
RPEQ certification isn't just a legal requirement for most engineering work in Queensland—it's an assurance that your project is being handled by a qualified professional committed to safety, compliance, and quality.
When is RPEQ Certification Required?
Under the Professional Engineers Act 2002, "Professional Engineering Services" are services that require or are based on the application of engineering principles and data to activities such as design, construction, production, operation, or maintenance. These services involve a level of expertise beyond what is covered by prescriptive standards—documents that outline procedures or criteria without requiring advanced engineering judgement.
A common misunderstanding: Some believe that industry-specific legislation—particularly in mining—overrides the Professional Engineers Act. It does not. The PE Act applies to all 19 areas of engineering it covers and works in tandem with other legislation. Engineers working in the mining industry are not exempt; if they are providing professional engineering services, they must be registered as RPEQs.
More Than a Sign-Off
RPEQ registration is not a tick-box exercise. It's not about having a registered engineer sign off at the end of a project. RPEQs are expected to be involved throughout the engineering lifecycle—from concept and design through to construction, commissioning, and operation. Registration is about demonstrating ongoing competence and professionalism, and giving the public confidence that engineering work has been properly overseen from start to finish.
Verifying Registration
The BPEQ maintains an online register of nearly 12,000 RPEQs from Queensland, interstate, and overseas. You can search by name, location, area of expertise, or company to verify an engineer's credentials. Check if your engineer is registered here.
